It’s not that other communications companies are altruistic, but AT&T has some serious black marks against it.
- AT&T has illegally aided the present US administration to spy on citizens when even the criminal leaders of Qwest said no, give us a warrant.
- AT&T has campaigned to create an internet that is the opposite of ‘neutral’. As an internet service provider AT&T could choose to block content that they didn’t make money on, or just didn’t like. Far fetched? AT&T recently censored the broadcast of lyrics from a concert they sponsored (as the Pearl Jam lyrics were mildly critical of the Bush administration).
Lawrence Lessig writes well on this particular incident, here.
