At the Frankfurt Book Fair the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF) announced the final version of of a major revision to EPUB, the global standard interchange and delivery format for eBooks and other digital publications. The IDPF membership elevated EPUB 3.0 to a final IDPF Recommended Specification.
Based on HTML5, EPUB 3.0 adds support for
O'Reilly, the technical publisher (who offer their technical manuals and reference guides as DRM-free EPUB, PDF, and Kindle compatible .mobi documents) has a free guide to the specification "What is EPUB 3?"
The latest version of Apple's iBook application (Version 1.3) for iOS devices supports some of the new enhancements and other devices such as Barnes & Noble's Nook, Sony's Reader and Windows Phone 7 are expected to offer support for the new EPUB standard soon.
